Editor settings
Which editor a changed file opens in: chosen for you, one for everything, one per language, or one per repository.
Innesta ▸ Settings… (⌘,) → Editor decides where opening a file sends it.
The supported editors are Visual Studio Code, Cursor, Zed, Sublime Text, Xcode,
Nova, BBEdit, TextMate, the JetBrains IDEs and Fleet. Innesta finds them as
installed applications, not on your PATH, so no command line tool has to be
set up. All of them except Fleet open at the changed line.
Default Editor
Automatic is where it starts. It chooses file by file, and takes the first of these it finds:
- An editor that already has the repository open, when macOS lets Innesta read its window titles.
- The editor the project’s own files point to —
Package.swiftor an.xcodeprojto Xcode, pyproject.tomlto PyCharm,Cargo.tomlto RustRover, and so on. In a monorepo, the one nearest the file wins. - The editor for the file’s language.
- A general editor, such as Visual Studio Code or Sublime Text.
- The application macOS opens the file with.
An .idea folder says only that the project is a JetBrains one, so it goes to
the JetBrains IDE with a window in front, or to the only one installed. Innesta
does not guess between several.
Choose an editor instead of Automatic, and every file opens there.
Language Overrides
Add Override… picks a language, then an editor for it — Python files in PyCharm, say, and everything else in the default. Each override has its own remove button, and Remove All Overrides… appears once there are two; it asks before it clears them.
One repository
In a repository’s own settings — the gear beside its name in the sidebar — the
Editor section overrides everything else for that repository alone.
Use Global Setting undoes it. The choice is stored in the repository’s
.git/config, so it is never committed.
A repository override comes first, then a language override, then the default editor.
An editor you have removed
A saved editor that is no longer installed stays selected, marked Not Available, and a warning says what is used in its place. Put the editor back and the setting applies again.
